My uncle

My uncle who volunteered to go and be in the Viet nam war has this plaque on his wall. He got it from the first detatchment of the 56th air commando wing upon his rotation out.

"War is a ugly thing but not the ugliest of things. The decay and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling that thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for witch he is willing to to fight , nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men then himself."

My lips bleed

After a tough loss by the Vols (congratulations Vandy) not much can cheer me up. This quote from Ulysses Jones in today's Knox news sentinel turned it all around.

"There's no way you can question (DeBerry's) integrity."

Must ...try....not ...to ...laugh....hold....back.....all..... want ...to ...say.... tears....rolling down....face.

The only part worse is he probably believes it.

Nothing to it.

The gov can help his credibility with the state trooper issue if he starts by giving the donations back to the extort...........I mean the donors who were promoted.

If the gov takes the decision away form the ethics committee whose ideas will he use ? The study committee he put together? The democrat party? His own ideas? What will he do to stop people who give over the legal limit to campaigns as he did in his run for office? Will he say we need to press charges on the people who have already violated the law ? Will he indict (o.k.?) himself?

Beat to the punch

The Tennessean beat me to the punch on a problem I was looking into for a constituent .This person (who will remain anonymous) was telling me of a state trooper from Knoxville who was promoted from sgt. to captain after giving a large donation to the governor through a Chattanooga building contractor .

But wait it gets worse. The trooper was just getting off of a suspension for writing tickets to dead people, had several sexual harassment claims against him as well as other questionable activity that was still being investigated. I will tell more as it becomes available and is verified.

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

SBOR Victory

The movement of the student bill of rights in Tennessee took a giant step yesterday .The UT system, The Tennessee board of regents and the Tennessee independent colleges all signed off on the ACE agreement. This is similar to what was passed in Colorado and follows the goals of the student bill of rights.

I have been working with reps from these groups for a few months to work this out and it has come to fruition.

I commend these groups for looking out for the students and staff of their institutions.

I LIKE

The future is not someplace we are going to
But the one we are creating
The paths are not to be found
But made and the activity of making them changes
Both the maker and the destination.

35 to 0

No that is not the score of a bad football game (I can't stand to watch many more then I have this year). That is the number of ethics proposals the Republicans have put forward vs. the number of ethics proposals that the Democrats have put forward. You can check out all 35 Republican proposals at www.tnhousegop.org .There is also a place to do feedback on what you like or don't like about each idea. Can't be much more open then that.

Matthew White had a great column over at South end grounds on Wilder two days ago I wonder if the MSM will pick it up.

Trustegious!

When a blog as trusted as much as this one receives prestigious national recognition only one word can be used to describe it .That word is Trustegious!.

I got this comment from a reader and thought it was interesting. The part about the counter I have thought about several times .I am not sure if I want to know how many people read it . I am not sure if I will be impressed or let down. I like to think that the only people reading it are a few political junkies and a insider or two.Another big factor is the cost. Hey, five bucks is five bucks it all adds up.

Stacey,

According to the Lawmakers Blog you are one of the best elected official bloggers in the country.

http://lawmakers.blogspot.com

The only thing that is holding you back from being ranked number one is that you don't share your traffic stats with your readers like Rep. John Conyers from Michigan does.

http://www.conyersblog.us/

Go to the very bottom of his blog page in the lower right hand corner and see the little "Sitemeter" button. Click on that little button and see his traffic stats here.

It looks like he just added it in the last couple of days or so. Looks like he gets around 1,000 visitors per day. Sharing traffic stats is one more way to be open, honest, and transparent with the people.

Most of the big-time bloggers in the blogosphere share their traffic stats with the readers. It is the open and honest thing to do.

You can get a quick and easy free site traffic counter here.

http://www.web-stat.com

It's free for 30 days then $5 per month after that.

The traffic stats it gives you look good. See here for example.

Or use Sitemeter like Conyers and many other big-time bloggers.

Thanks for being one of the best leaders in America today. Keep up the good work.

Ethics bill resurgence

It seems that the bill Mae Beavers and I brought forward dealing with conflicts of interest when voting on bills (see my may 17 post) is having a resurgence as part of the republican ethics package. A few months ago the Tennessean listed it as the top bill that should have passed to improve ethics. As you can imagine it is being met with a great deal of resistance.

water cooler talk

Fred Thompson For Governor bumper sticker slogan "FRED THOMPSON Tennessee needs a little law and order" (HT Terry)

Ford to drop out ? See my Sep 12 post.

Jack O' lantern? The only thing I know about them is they seem quite popular year after year. Almost every house wants one going into November.
