In a wide sweeping piece of legislation Arizona has cracked down on illegal aliens.
It says if you are not in the country legally you are a criminal and gives the states the power to enforce the law.
Currently, immigration offenses are violations of federal, not state, law, and local police officers only can inquire about a person's immigration status if that person is suspected of another crime. Under SB1070, however, Arizona police will have the right to stop anyone on "reasonable suspicion" that they may be an illegal immigrant and can arrest them if they are not carrying a valid driver's license or identity papers.
I wonder if the federal government will fight to keep this power of law enforcement of illegal immigration laws at the federal level. Obviously they have been doing a pretty poor job of enforcement so far but they seem to fight any effort by the states to take responsibility for their own governance.
