Defunding of Planned parenthood

UPDATE: The language to my budget amendment to defund Planned Parenthood was fixed before the budget hit the house floor yesterday. It keeps it clear, our health departments shall use all the money for title X and there will be none left over to go to outside groups (like Planned Parenthood). Word is Planned Parenthood Memphis was getting 30% of their budget from the state.

  1. It's nice to see a Republican who realizes that government agencies are more effective at spending money than private enterprises.

It's a bit disconcerting to see decisions being made based on the "word" on the street, though...research is probably too difficult, I understand.

  4. This should be a real setback for Margaret Sanger's "Negro Project".

  5. Andrew, why is ANY private group being subsidized by my tax money? Do you expect them not to be able to stand on their own? If they can't then they should re-evaluate what they are offering and how they are offering it. Would you be offering the same reasons if the group were perhaps supporting another section of the populace, gamblers anonymous?
If the government bought services from them, and the contract was bid out, I have no problem. To give money to a group without purchasing services or bidding for work is wrong.

  6. Title X federal funding is granted through an RFP process operated by the Department of Health in TN. It's not "given" to anyone or any organization. It is used (and the use is documented) to help women prevent unintended pregancies, thus saving the state of TN millions in our Medicaid program. Did you know that two thirds of the people on Medicaid (TennCare) are pregnant women and children? Seems like making contraception as available as possible and offering other health services like PAP smears and breast exams would be something that most reasonable people would support. In the long run, it saves all of us money.
